RCS adds images, buttons and carousels to the phone’s default messaging app. Here is when it beats plain SMS and when it does not.
What RCS adds
RCS Business Messaging shows your brand name and logo where verified, and supports rich cards, carousels, action buttons and suggested replies. Customers can tap to buy, track or call without leaving the chat.
Where it shines
Product launches with images, order updates with tracking buttons, appointment booking and tickets. Anything where the customer should act right away benefits from buttons instead of a typed link.
The limits
RCS reaches only supported phones on supported carriers, and brand verification takes time. For OTPs and critical alerts that must reach every phone, SMS is still the safest choice.
Use both
The best setup is RCS with SMS fallback: send rich messages where RCS works and a plain SMS everywhere else, from one campaign.
Frequently asked questions
Should I replace SMS with RCS?
Use both. Send RCS where it is supported and fall back to SMS elsewhere, and keep OTPs on SMS.
